Sunblock Reminder System

Most sunburns occur when sunscreen is not reapplied regularly, emphasizing the importance of consistency.

OBJECTIVE:
Design a device to remind users when to reapply sunscreen

HOW DO SUNBURNS HAPPEN?

Prolonged sun exposure without proper sunscreen use increases the risk of sunburns and skin cancer, including melanoma, a dangerous form of skin cancer. Sun safety practices are crucial to reducing these risks.

Only 1/10 people use sunscreen daily, and most forget to apply regularly. Sunscreen becomes less effective with sweat and water exposure, which is why reapplying it every 2 hours is crucial for maximum effectiveness.

DESIGN GUIDELINES.

To help people remember when to reapply sunscreen, creating a user-friendly device that was both fun and simple to use was crucial. Such a device could promote the formation of healthy habits by making the process engaging and accessible.

remind the user

instill the habit

make it fun

BRAINSTORM.

In ideating the device, I explored innovative new directions, while also including familiar, intuitive elements like those found in traditional sunscreen bottles. This approach balanced creativity with recognition

SUNBUDDY (VERSION 1)

The initial model featured a timer device that could be attached to existing sunscreen bottles. Parts of this design worked, however, it was now clear to me that the device needed to be more than just a timer; it needed to be a wearable timer.

PHYSICAL PROTOTYPE.

Given that the core of this project centered around creating a user-friendly solution, I recognized the need to delve further into the human interaction element. To achieve this, I resin printed a working model, which enabled a hands-on assessment of its usability and functionality.

SUNBUDDY (VERSION 2)

The refined design still involves a device that attaches to a sunscreen bottle with a magnetic strip. However, this version features a more intuitive design with a pinch-to-clip mechanism, allowing the user to attach the device to their clothing!

HOW IT WORKS.

Apply sunscreen

Remove Sunbuddy from the bottle

Pinch clip to activate 2hr timer

Flashes and vibrates when to reapply

INTERNAL COMPONENTS.

Both LEDs and a sound emitter were essential features to make the device flash and emit a beep when it's time to reapply sunscreen.

GOODBYE SUNBURNS.

The days of worrying about sunburn are a thing of the past! This device offers a straightforward and hassle-free user experience, ensuring your skin stays protected.
